Morning with Mom (or Adventures in Thrifting)

I think my mom knew that I’d make the journey (well, not so much a journey) to meet up with her for the tag sale on the Common (traditional New England common, large green space in the center of town surrounded by churches). I picked up some goodies, but it wouldn’t be me to share what I didn’t bring home and some of the fun stuff that I did find:

Next up are: what I did pick up, The Cummington Fair, War Jet, and well…is it time for a new blog?

Celebrating Farmers Market Week: Visiting the Pittsfield Farmers Market

In honor of Massachusetts Farmer’s Market Week, (Sunday, August 22, through Saturday, August 28, during the week proclaimed by Governor Patrick as Massachusetts Farmers Market week,) I am participating in a state-wide blog-a-thon entitled “Loving Local: Celebrating the Flavors of Massachusetts.” When I heard about the blog-a-thon, I knew I wanted to be a part of this, There is so much good work being done in the Ag (short for agricultural) community, from Farmers Markets accepting SNAP benefits (formerly known as food stamps), to organizations such as Berkshire Grown:

Berkshire Grown envisions a community where healthy farms define the open landscape, where a wide diversity of fresh, seasonal food and flowers continue to be readily available to everyone, and where we celebrate our agricultural bounty by buying from our neighboring family farms and savoring their distinctive Berkshire harvest.

We’ve also got a few food bloggers (Plate to Plate, and Berkshire Food Journal) a couple of great books (The Backyard Homestead and The Locavore Way) and well…can’t help but mention that the New York Times wrote about our area as one that’s experiencing a “locavore boom.” It’s here to stay. As I’ve mentioned to many of my friends/family: the local food movement is parallel in many ways to to “buy local, buy handmade” movement that has occurred around the country. Localized economies are where it’s at.

Last Saturday I stopped by the Pittsfield Farmers Market which is right around the corner from my apartment to check it out, and stopped over the booth for Taft Farms,  and picked up some tomatoes and raspberries. The Pittsfield Farmer’s Market is near Patrick’s Pub and is in it’s first year. Check it out every Saturday in Downtown Pittsfield!

Check out the short (short!) video clip I took while at the Pitts Farmer’s Market. More video to come on the blog!

Sorting buttons keeps me sane

What a month! Do all of my posts seem overwhelmed? Summer in the Berkshires is busy for the culturally and socially inclined. One artist that I saw this month was singer-songwriter Catie Curtis. Her song “Happy” resonated with me and I have to “let myself be happy” rather that try so hard.

I’ve had a few shows this summer and have finally gotten into a groove designing new pieces. I recieved a small fortune of buttons from a fellow artisan and have spent my nights home sorting buttons. It’s one of my favorite things to do and believe it or not, it’s a stress reliever.

I just got a new batch of vintage buttons, will post some of the interesting ones soon!

The Sunday Flea Part 2

Hey! Where Are You?

I’ve been asking myself the same thing! Lucy has been wondering too. I’ve got so many lovely pictures from thrifting adventures and life in the “Shire” that I have to share in addition to my art, just the time to get there….

How is your summer going? In the spirit of The MeetUp list of goals (which I’ve missed since May) Here is a list of goals…short term, but still important:

  • Explore more of the local downtown: moved from a sleepy little hilltown to a house/apt right around the corner from my work and still so much to discover/roam/engage.
  • Create! Not just to sell, but to enjoy and embrace. I also have plenty of pictures to hang, settling to do, and will share in time.
  • Enjoy the summer while we have it! More grilling outside, more creating outside on the patio, entertaining friends…

I know the list is not very driven by buttons but I’ll come back to center soon. That reminds me: thanks to all who came out to the Pittsfield Art Show! What a weekend! Great to connect with new artists and reconnect with the Pittsfield Art Scene.  My previous job in state government coupled with work being done with BerkshireMade has given me a deep appreciation of supporting the local economy, whether that be businesses, art, food/farmers or entertainment. We are nothing without each other and the more we support each other’s efforts, the more we grow!
